This six-day laboratory-based training course provides students with both theoretical and hands-on training in essential cell culture and molecular biology techniques. The course introduces the basic principles of cell culture and provides practical training in cell maintenance, cell counting, and assessment of cell viability.

Students will also learn how cell culture can be used to evaluate the effects of different drugs and treatments on cancer cells through cytotoxicity assays. In addition, the course introduces the use of cultured cells in molecular biology studies, including the detection of specific genes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the analysis of gene expression using quantitative PCR (qPCR).

By the end of the course, students will have gained practical experience in basic cell culture techniques, cell viability assessment, cytotoxicity testing, PCR, and qPCR, together with an understanding of how these techniques can be applied in cancer and molecular biology research.

By the end of this course, participants will be proficient in:

  • Performing accurate cell counting and cell viability assessments.

  • Explain the theoretical principles underlying the cell culture and molecular biology techniques covered in the course.

  • Apply theoretical knowledge through hands-on training in essential cell culture and molecular biology techniques.

  • Perform an MTT assay as an example of a cytotoxicity assay for evaluating the effects of different treatments on cancer cells.

  • Explain the differences between PCR and quantitative PCR (qPCR) and their respective applications.

  • Perform PCR for gene detection and qPCR for the analysis of gene expression.
